Running with the Kenyans – Adharanand Finn
Guardian editor Adharand Finn had loved running since he was a schoolboy and whilst he did well in local races, he had always wondered “what if” he trained really hard. Inspired by the Finnish athlete Annemari Sandell who trained with the Kenyans and encouraged by his sister-in-law who lives in Kenya, Finn decides to spend a year with the Kenyans at their training base in Iten. In 2011 the top 20 marathon times were all run by Kenyans and in the 2011 World Championship they won a total of 17 running medals. Finn moves his family to Iten, the running capital of the world and spends his year trying to find out the secret of this dominance. A wonderful, well-written story, which can either be read as that, or to give an insight into ‘what it takes’ to win at the highest level.
