Matt Walker : Sleep is your superpower
This 20 minute Ted talk is definitely worth listening to and sharing with anyone worrying about summer exams, work deadlines or health in ageing.
I have written about sleep before in my posts ‘sleep for performance’ and ‘sleep nutrition’ and believe research categorically shows that good sleep is really important for performance and beneficial for long term health. In this short engaging talk Matt Walker shares many of the great things that are linked with good sleep and describes some of the health risks that increase when we are sleep deprived. Sleep is vital for memory, both before learning and afterwards, as you process the things you have learnt. This is illustrated with some interesting studies on memory (starting at 1 minute 21) but I recommend you watch it all, if only to see how to grab attention at the beginning of a talk and maintain it throughout.
To improve sleep Matt Walker’s main recommendation is having a strict routine with the same bedtime and wake times at the weekend as in the week.
